ACEs are potentially traumatic events that occur before the age of 18. There has been a wide array of studies on this topic demonstrating that there is a dose-dependent relationship between ACEs and negative health outcomes in adulthood. ACEs are not only associated with risky health behaviors such as smoking and problematic drug/alcohol use, but also seem to impact our genetic structure (such as epigenetics and telomere length).
